Nollywood actress Toyin Abraham has publicly expressed her frustration with piracy following a recent incident during a screening of her new film, Alakada: Bad and Boujee. The actress shared a video on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, revealing that a cinema-goer was caught secretly recording the film. The incident highlights the ongoing issue of piracy that filmmakers in Nigeria face.
In the video, Abraham explained that the individual caught recording was confronted, and the footage was promptly deleted. Despite the violation, the actress decided not to press further charges, allowing the person to leave without consequences. “We caught someone at the cinema, who came to record Alakada: Bhad and Boujee. She deleted it, and I told them to let her go,” Abraham said in her post.
While the situation was resolved calmly, Abraham made it clear that she would not be as lenient if similar incidents occurred in the future. The actress emphasized the importance of respecting intellectual property rights, particularly in the entertainment industry, where piracy continues to be a significant issue. “Please stop recording; if they catch anyone, I won’t interfere again,” she warned in her message.
Abraham’s plea was directed at her followers and the broader public, urging them to understand the negative impact of piracy on filmmakers. She conveyed her exhaustion from dealing with such incidents, highlighting the challenges filmmakers face in protecting their work from illegal distribution. “Please, guys, I am so tired,” she said, indicating her frustration with the persistent issue of piracy.
Piracy has long been a problem for Nigerian filmmakers, with many movies being illegally recorded and distributed online, often before they even hit the cinema screens. This not only hurts the revenue of filmmakers but also undermines the hard work and creativity that goes into producing films.
