Tragic Stampede at Oyo State Christmas Funfair Claims Lives of 32 Children

The Oyo State Police Command has launched a full investigation into the tragic stampede that resulted in the deaths of 32 children at a Christmas funfair held in the state on December 18. The event, which had initially planned for 5,000 attendees, saw over 7,500 people in attendance, overwhelming the event’s capacity and resulting in a fatal disaster.

Organized by Prophetess Naomi Shikemi, a former queen of the Ooni of Ife, and Oriyomi Hamzat, an Ibadan-based broadcaster, the funfair quickly turned chaotic when the large crowd led to a deadly stampede. While the event was intended to bring joy during the festive season, it instead became the site of an unimaginable tragedy.

Speaking on behalf of the police, Oyo State Police spokesperson Adewale Osifeso confirmed that investigations are underway. “Investigation is in progress. Updates will be provided accordingly, please,” he stated, reassuring the public that the matter is being treated with urgency.

Witnesses at the scene have pointed to overcrowding and a lack of proper planning as the main causes of the stampede. Reports suggest that the event organizers failed to account for the unexpectedly high turnout, which led to a fatal crush. Additionally, safety measures were deemed insufficient, as the large crowd overwhelmed the space meant to accommodate far fewer people.

The tragedy has sparked public outrage, with both the families of the victims and the local community demanding accountability. While the organizers have expressed their condolences, many are calling for a thorough review of the planning and management of public events in the region. Local authorities have also expressed concern over the incident, vowing to hold those responsible accountable.

As investigations continue, the authorities are focusing on whether the necessary permits were obtained for the event and whether appropriate safety protocols were in place. The incident has raised important questions about event management and the oversight of large public gatherings, prompting calls for stricter regulations to prevent such disasters in the future.

In the wake of the tragedy, the Oyo State Police Command has urged the public to remain calm while the investigation progresses. The police have promised to ensure that justice is served for the victims and their families, as the community mourns the loss of 32 young lives during what was meant to be a joyous occasion.
