Trump Criticizes Biden’s Pardon of Hunter Biden as ‘Abuse of Justice’

President-elect Donald Trump has condemned the decision by outgoing President Joe Biden to pardon his son, Hunter Biden, who was facing possible prison sentences for federal felony gun and tax convictions. The presidential pardon has sparked political controversy, with Trump accusing Biden of abusing his powers and reversing previous promises not to use the presidency for personal gain.

On December 1, President Biden issued a statement defending his decision to pardon Hunter, arguing that his son had been unfairly prosecuted due to his family name. “I believe in the justice system, but as I have wrestled with this, I also believe raw politics has infected this process and it led to a miscarriage of justice,” Biden said. The president explained that after considering the situation, he felt there was no point in delaying his decision further.

Hunter Biden had been convicted earlier this year of making false statements about his drug use when purchasing a firearm, which is a felony under federal law. In addition, he had pleaded guilty in a separate case to federal tax evasion charges. He was scheduled for sentencing on December 12 for the gun conviction and on December 16 for the tax evasion case, both of which could have resulted in prison time.

Despite the legal troubles, President Biden’s statement highlighted that the decision to pardon Hunter was driven by a belief that the case was politically motivated. “Once I made this decision this weekend, there was no sense in delaying it further,” Biden added. He emphasized that as both a father and president, he had to make a difficult decision, and he hoped the American public would understand his reasoning.

In response to the presidential pardon, Donald Trump quickly voiced his criticism, accusing President Biden of favoritism and double standards. On the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Trump wrote, “Does the pardon given by Joe to Hunter include the J-6 Hostages, who have now been imprisoned for years? Such an abuse and miscarriage of justice.” Trump’s comment appeared to draw a direct comparison between Hunter Biden’s legal situation and that of individuals involved in the January 6 Capitol riots, many of whom remain imprisoned for their roles in the violent insurrection.
