The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has revealed that renowned gospel evangelist Rev. Uma Ukpai gave him strength during the darkest moment of his life. Adeboye made this revelation while speaking at Ukpai’s 80th birthday celebration at the International Worship Centre in Uyo, where he reflected on how Ukpai’s resilience in the face of personal tragedy provided him with the fortitude to cope with the sudden loss of his third son, Dare, in May 2021.
Describing the death of his son as the most difficult time he had ever faced, Adeboye recalled the heartbreaking moment he lost Dare. “In the darkest moment of my life since becoming a Christian, when I lost my son without notice, when my son phoned me on Sunday evening ‘Daddy, the weekend programme has been extremely successful, glory be to God and thank you for your prayer support,’” Adeboye said. However, just two days later, he received the devastating news that his son had passed away unexpectedly.
Adeboye shared the emotional toll the loss had on him, noting that he had to continue with his duties, including preaching on Friday, despite the immense grief. It was during this time that he found inspiration in the example of Rev. Ukpai, who had experienced the loss of multiple children in a single day but continued to serve God with unwavering faith.
“I know he lost more than one child in a day and he did not waver, he kept on serving God,” Adeboye stated, expressing admiration for Ukpai’s strength. The RCCG leader emphasized that Ukpai’s steadfastness in continuing to serve God despite his own pain provided him with the strength to endure his own sorrow.
Pastor Adeboye acknowledged that Ukpai’s unwavering faith had a profound impact on him. “For me, the reference point that gave me strength was Uma Ukpai,” he said. This example of faith and resilience became a source of strength for Adeboye during one of the most difficult times of his life.
In addition to praising Ukpai’s strength, Adeboye also spoke about the long-lasting influence that Ukpai has had. “It’s only when you get to heaven that you will realize how powerful your influence is on earth,” Adeboye said, reflecting on the far-reaching impact of Ukpai’s life and ministry.
The celebration of Ukpai’s 80th birthday was not only an occasion to honor his years of service but also to reflect on the enduring legacy he has left through his dedication to God, even in the face of profound personal loss.
