UNILAG Student Walks to Break Guinness World Record

Ololade Ayelabola, a University of Lagos (UNILAG) undergraduate, is making headlines with an inspiring attempt to break a 41-year-old Guinness World Record for the longest distance walked on a catwalk by a model. As of now, she has been walking for over 71 hours, aiming to surpass the current record of 96 hours. Standing at 5 feet 10 inches, Ayelabola’s endeavor is not just about breaking records, but also challenging the strict modeling standards that often dominate the industry.

The 21-year-old has faced her own share of challenges in the modeling world, having been rejected from two national fashion shows due to not meeting the typical height requirements. “I was told I wasn’t tall enough, and that was really discouraging,” Ayelabola shared. But instead of letting these rejections define her, she has channeled her frustration into this record-breaking effort, using her walk to send a powerful message about inclusivity in modeling.

By walking for 96 continuous hours without stopping, Ayelabola is not just aiming for a world record; she’s also advocating for greater diversity and breaking down the barriers that prevent many aspiring models from entering the industry. “I want to prove that beauty isn’t just about height or size. There’s room for everyone,” she said. Her challenge is quickly gaining attention as it highlights the unrealistic beauty standards that often restrict opportunities for talent in the fashion world.

Ayelabola’s journey has resonated beyond the fashion industry, sparking conversations about body image, inclusivity, and the pressures that models face to conform to narrow ideals. Her brave attempt underscores her commitment to changing the narrative and inspiring others to embrace their individuality in the face of societal expectations. As she continues her walk, many are rallying behind her, hoping her message will lead to lasting change in the industry.
