On Thursday night, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) re-arrested popular social media figure Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. The arrest occurred as he attempted to board a KLM flight to London via Amsterdam.
The EFCC’s spokesperson, Mr. Dele Oyewale, provided details regarding the agency’s actions in a statement released on Friday morning. “Bobrisky was taken into custody for not answering several invitations from the commission,” Oyewale explained. This statement highlights the agency’s frustration with Bobrisky’s previous refusals to comply with their requests for questioning.
Bobrisky is currently under investigation for allegations of bribery, specifically for reportedly offering N15 million to EFCC officials in an attempt to have money laundering charges against him dropped. The nature of these allegations underscores the serious legal issues facing the social media influencer.
Mr. Oyewale emphasized that the EFCC categorically denies Bobrisky’s bribery claims. “We apprehended him in Lagos, and he will be transported to Abuja,” he confirmed, indicating that the investigation is set to escalate as Bobrisky is moved to the capital for further questioning.
The EFCC spokesperson also addressed the gravity of Bobrisky’s accusations against the commission. “He accused us of bribery and corruption, yet he repeatedly ignored our summons to substantiate these claims,” Oyewale stated. This highlights the tension between Bobrisky and the commission, suggesting that his failure to respond has resulted in significant consequences.
Moreover, Oyewale pointed out Bobrisky’s refusal to appear before the National Assembly to discuss these serious allegations. “Such serious allegations cannot be ignored. We had no option but to take him into custody to ensure he provides evidence to support his accusations,” he added, reinforcing the EFCC’s stance on the matter.
