Wellesley Bolt, the father of Olympic sprinting legend Usain Bolt, has passed away at the age of 68. According to local media reports, he died on Monday after battling a prolonged illness. His death has left the Bolt family and the Jamaican community in mourning, with tributes pouring in from across the nation.
Wellesley Bolt played a significant role in the success of his son, Usain, who became an eight-time Olympic gold medalist and one of the greatest athletes in history. Known for his quiet and supportive nature, Wellesley was often seen celebrating with his son after his historic victories on the track.
Before his son’s rise to global fame, Wellesley worked in the coffee industry for 16 years before transitioning to managing a local grocery store with his wife, Jennifer Bolt. The couple provided for their family in Sherwood Content, a rural Jamaican community that, at the time, lacked basic infrastructure such as paved roads and running water.
Despite Usain Bolt’s worldwide recognition and wealth, Wellesley remained deeply connected to his hometown. Even as his son’s success brought significant improvements to the area, including better infrastructure, he chose to stay rooted in the place where he had raised his family.
He is survived by his children—Usain, Sadiki, and Christine Bolt-Hylton—who have all expressed their deep sorrow over his passing. The Bolt family has received an outpouring of condolences, with many recognizing Wellesley’s quiet strength and unwavering support for his son’s legendary career.
Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness paid tribute to Wellesley Bolt in an emotional statement. “I join with every Jamaican in extending my deepest and most sincere condolences to @usainbolt, his beloved mother Mrs. Jennifer Bolt, and the entire Bolt family, following the passing of their patriarch, Mr. Wellesley Bolt,” Holness wrote. He described Wellesley as “a strong, quiet force behind one of Jamaica’s greatest sons,” adding, “Usain, we have all witnessed the deep love and respect you’ve always shown for your family. As you grieve this great loss, the prayers and support of an entire nation are with you.”
