Vector Advocates for a Return to Tradition as Key to Nigeria’s Progress

Nigerian rapper Vector has expressed a desire to make a significant cultural change in the country, emphasizing the importance of preserving and prioritizing Nigeria’s rich traditions. During a recent discussion on Pulse Fun Facts alongside fellow artist Reminisce, Vector outlined his vision for the future, advocating for a greater focus on the nation’s cultural heritage in education and daily life.

“If I could change anything in Nigeria, I would restrict Nigerian thinking to the traditional way,” Vector stated. He expanded on his idea, suggesting that the country’s culture and traditions should play a more prominent role in shaping the identity of its people. “Let me rephrase: I would make sure our culture and traditions are heavily part of who we are,” he added.

Vector gave examples of how this could be implemented in Nigeria’s education system. He proposed that in regions like Yorubaland, the Yoruba language should receive higher marks in schools than other subjects, and similarly, in Igboland, the Igbo language should be given greater emphasis. “So that you can get accustomed to the culture and preserve the core fabric of the country,” he explained. He believes that a deep-rooted connection to one’s cultural heritage can offer lasting mental and emotional sustenance, stating, “What sustains me mentally is Yoruba.”

Reminisce

While Vector focused on the cultural aspect, Reminisce, the rapper joining him on the show, had a different perspective on what needs to be changed in Nigeria. “If I could change something, it’d be the system of government,” Reminisce explained. He argued that the core issue plaguing the country is the structure of governance, rather than individual leadership. “There is too much interest in who governs rather than how we are governed,” he said, pointing to the need for an overhaul of Nigeria’s political system.
