The wife of the Governor of Zamfara State, Huriyya Dauda Lawal, has successfully arranged marriages for 100 orphaned girls in the state. The event, which took place on Thursday, December 19, 2024, saw the young brides, who had been well cared for prior to the ceremony, receive attention for their beautification. This initiative is part of her ongoing efforts to provide support for orphaned girls in the state, as she continues to champion causes for vulnerable groups.
According to reports, a dowry of one hundred and fifty-one thousand Naira was paid for each of the brides, a gesture by the First Lady to ensure that the girls were properly cared for in their new marital homes. In addition to the dowry, Huriyya Dauda Lawal also provided essential household items for the brides. These included sets of furniture, such as cushions, beds, wardrobes, mattresses, and kitchen utensils, helping to set the newlyweds up for a comfortable start to their married lives.
The First Lady also took further steps to ensure the grooms would be able to support their new families. Each groom received financial assistance of 50,000 Naira as a grant to help them start a business and become self-reliant. During the ceremony, Huriyya urged the brides to respect their husbands and practice patience in their marriages, emphasizing the importance of mutual understanding and commitment in the new unions.
Huriyya also assured the newlyweds that the Zakkat and Endowment Board would always be available to support them in case they encountered any challenges in their marriages. This initiative aims to provide a safety net for the young couples, ensuring that they have access to resources and assistance if needed. The First Lady’s actions have drawn attention to her continued efforts to address social welfare issues in Zamfara State.
While Huriyya’s initiative has been widely praised by some, it has also attracted significant criticism. Critics have raised concerns over the nature of these arranged marriages, questioning whether the orphaned girls truly had a say in the process. One social media user expressed their concern, writing, “Did the orphans agree with the fixed marriage? I wonder how many of them would have loved to further their education instead!”
Despite the criticism, Huriyya Dauda Lawal’s supporters argue that her intentions are noble, aiming to provide the girls with stability and a sense of security. Some believe that her actions will help the orphans transition from vulnerable situations to more stable environments with the support of their husbands and the resources provided. However, the mixed reactions highlight the complexities surrounding such initiatives and the need for careful consideration of the wishes and aspirations of the individuals involved.
As discussions continue online, the First Lady’s initiative remains a topic of debate. While some view it as a positive step toward supporting vulnerable girls, others question whether it is the most appropriate approach to addressing the needs of orphaned young women in the state.
