Nigerian music icon Davido has publicly endorsed Asue Ighodalo, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Edo state. Davido’s late mother, Veronica Adeleke, hails from Edo state, making this endorsement a personal and emotional investment.
On his Instagram Story, Davido shared a ThisDay cover featuring Ighodalo, captioning it “The next governor of my mother’s homeland.” This move is expected to sway younger voters and boost Ighodalo’s popularity.
Davido’s uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, recently joined other PDP governors in Benin City for a rally supporting Ighodalo. This show of force demonstrates the PDP’s commitment to winning the Edo governorship election.
Ighodalo has garnered support from other prominent figures, including Banky W, Adesua Etomi, Etinosa Idemudia, Charles Inojie, Aloy Chife, ex-VP Atiku Abubakar, and former Cross River governors Liyel Imoke and Donald Duke.
The Edo governorship election, scheduled for September 21, 2024, will see Ighodalo face off against Monday Okpebholo (APC) and Olumide Akpata (Labour Party). Incumbent Governor Godwin Obaseki is concluding his second term.
Davido’s endorsement adds significant momentum to Ighodalo’s campaign, which has been gaining traction. With polls indicating a strong lead, Ighodalo’s supporters are optimistic about his chances of emerging victorious.
As the election draws near, all eyes are on Edo state, where the outcome will have significant implications for the region’s future.
