The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has accused the Federal Government’s sub-committee of stalling negotiations to resolve the union’s demands. Happiness Uduk, Zonal Coordinator of ASUU Calabar Zone, expressed frustration over the government’s tactics.
ASUU had given the government a 14-day ultimatum to address lingering issues, including the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement and withheld salaries. Uduk stated, “They will say, ‘Oh, we can’t find this document,’ and when we provide it, they’ll say, ‘Oh, there’s no cash backing.'”
The union demands the release of unpaid salaries for staff on sabbatical, part-time, and adjunct positions affected by the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS). They also seek outstanding third-party deductions.
Uduk lamented the government’s failure to implement Memoranda of Understanding and Action between 2013 and 2022. Renegotiation has lingered for over seven years.
The ASUU chairperson regretted that the current administration has frustrated efforts to adopt and implement the renegotiated agreement. “Even the wage award and palliative cannot replace the renegotiated agreement,” she said.
Uduk warned that the union would withdraw services if the government remains insincere. “We should not be held responsible for the breakdown in industrial harmony,” she emphasized.
ASUU urges authorities to address the looming crisis. With the ultimatum expiring soon, the union’s next steps remain uncertain.
