The Kano State chapter of the National Association of Government General and Medical Dental Practitioners has declared its intention to go on an indefinite strike starting October 1. This decision comes after the state government failed to meet the association’s demands, despite reaching an agreement in June 8
According to Dr. Anas Hassan, secretary of the association in Kano, the government has not addressed the issue of hazard allowance, specifically the Post-COVID-19 hazard allowance, which has been paid by the Federal Government since 2021. “Despite reaching an agreement with the Kano State Government months ago, the government is yet to respond,” Dr. Hassan stated.
Newly employed medical doctors hired by the Kano State Government in September 2023 have also not received their salaries, Dr. Hassan disclosed. The medical practitioners expressed concerns over the dilapidated state of Kano hospitals and the lack of necessary equipment, emphasizing the urgent need to address these issues.
The doctor-to-patient ratio in Kano is significantly lower than the World Health Organization’s standard, with approximately 20 million people being served by only 600 doctors. This results in a ratio of one doctor to 33,000 patients, a critical situation that necessitates immediate attention.
Dr. Hassan highlighted the association’s frustration, stating that they have no option but to embark on the strike on October 1. The strike is intended to prompt the state government to take action and address the association’s demands.
The Kano State Government has been urged to take immediate action to prevent the strike and ensure the continued provision of healthcare services to the people of Kano.
The indefinite strike is set to begin on October 1, and its impact on the healthcare system in Kano State remains to be seen.
