NHRC Urges Peaceful Protest and Respect for Human Rights Ahead of October 1 Demonstrations

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called on protesters to exercise their rights within the bounds of the law ahead of the planned October 1 protest. NHRC Executive Secretary, Anthony Ojukwu, emphasized that protests are vital for democracy and citizen engagement in governance. He advised law enforcement agents to respect protesters’ rights to peaceful assembly and expression as enshrined in the 1999 constitution and regional and international instruments.

“Government should provide adequate protection for protesters against violence or intimidation as well as facilitate peaceful assemblies through appropriate measures,” Ojukwu stated. He also urged the government to put in place effective accountability mechanisms for holding law enforcement and security agencies accountable for any abuses committed during protests.

Ojukwu expressed concern over the clampdown of protesters and subsequent criminal prosecutions following the August 2024 End Bad Governance Protests. He noted that the August protests led to loss of lives and properties, yet there have been no arrests or prosecution of law enforcement and security agents responsible for the violations.

The NHRC is also concerned about the charges of treason imposed on some protesters. Ojukwu assured that the commission will continue to monitor the situation and trials.

Addressing protesters, Ojukwu advised them to avoid violence, destruction of property, and harmful behavior. “Exercise your right to peaceful protest within the ambits of the law, be very civil, and respect the rights of others,” he said. He emphasized the importance of cooperating with law enforcement agencies to ensure public safety.

The NHRC will monitor the protests to ensure compliance with human rights standards and investigate allegations of human rights violations.
