Former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has decried the process leading to his impeachment, describing it as irregular and unfair. Speaking at a rally held at his residence in GRA, Ikeja, on Saturday, January 25, 2025, Obasa dismissed the corruption allegations against him as “fictitious and unsubstantiated.”
Obasa, who was impeached on January 13 by more than two-thirds of the 40-member legislative house over alleged misconduct, claimed that his removal was orchestrated while he was out of the country. He also accused the Lagos State commissioner of police of facilitating the process. “I am not afraid of being removed; after all, it’s not my father’s chieftaincy title. If you want to do anything, do it well. They carried out the removal simply because I was away,” Obasa said.
The former speaker criticized the involvement of security forces in the process, contrasting it with previous leadership changes in the Assembly. “Lagos is a special place, and we must not denigrate the state,” he added. Obasa cited examples of former Speaker Jokotola Pelumi and former Deputy Speaker Adefunmilayo Tejuosho, whose removals, he claimed, adhered to proper legislative norms without external interference.
Challenging the allegations of corruption against him, Obasa called on his accusers to provide concrete evidence. “The Assembly is an institution above the common standard of excellence, and I will never partake in its destruction,” he asserted, reiterating his commitment to the integrity of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Obasa also expressed gratitude to members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, whom he described as a supportive ally. He highlighted his contributions to the Assembly, noting his re-election six times and his dedication to serving his constituents.
Following Obasa’s removal, his deputy, Mojisola Meranda, was elected as the new speaker, making history as the first female to lead the legislative body in Lagos State. Her appointment marks a significant milestone in the Assembly’s history.
