The Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) has announced November 2 as the date for the local government elections in the state.
Chairman of ABSIEC, Prof. George Chima, made the announcement on Saturday in Umuahia during a meeting with political parties and stakeholders.
“The essence of this meeting is to assure you of our true desire and determination to ensure that the right things are done,” Chima said.
According to Chima, the elections will be conducted in 184 wards across the state for chairmanship and councillorship positions.
The electoral commission has outlined a timetable for the elections, including party primaries from September 25 to October 4 and submission of candidate lists from October 5 to 7.
Electioneering campaigns are expected to commence on October 18 and conclude on October 31.
Chima assured stakeholders that the commission is committed to conducting free, fair, and credible elections. “Our assurance to you is that the elections into our various local government councils in 2024 will no longer be business as usual,” he said.
The Chairman of the state Inter-Party Advisory Council, Mr. Chimez Iwuoha, pledged that the 19 political parties would work harmoniously for the success of the elections.
This development comes as local government elections took place in other states, including Enugu, Imo, and Kwara, on Saturday.
The ABSIEC chairman emphasized the commission’s commitment to integrity, saying, “We are made up of men and women of integrity and outstanding pedigree, who are committed to changing the narratives.”
