Nigerian social activist Martin Otse, better known as Verydarkman (VDM), has regained his freedom after successfully meeting the conditions of his bail. VDM was arrested for impersonation following the circulation of a widely shared video clip in which he appeared dressed in a police outfit. This incident raised questions about impersonation and the boundaries of activism in Nigeria.
On Friday, VDM was granted bail in the amount of N2 million, along with the requirement for two sureties, each also valued at N2 million. His legal troubles began with the impersonation charges, which many believe were disproportionate to his actions. Supporters and advocates have been vocal about the implications of such charges against activists, particularly in a climate where freedom of expression is often scrutinized.
Following his arrest, VDM’s case drew significant attention on social media, where users rallied for his release and condemned the charges against him. His outspoken nature and commitment to social justice have made him a notable figure in Nigerian activism, leading to a considerable following. “We stand with Verydarkman and believe in his right to express himself,” one supporter stated during a rally advocating for his release.
