Biden Seeks to Cement Legacy at UN Amid Fears of Trump’s Return

Electoral College Vote

As President Joe Biden prepares to address the United Nations General Assembly for the final time, his focus is squarely on solidifying his legacy and countering the potential return of Donald Trump’s hardline policies. With the November US presidential election looming, countries worldwide are anxiously watching, fearing a Trump victory would revive his isolationist foreign policy.

Biden’s address will highlight his achievements and ensure they are “irreversible,” particularly in international alliances and climate action. According to White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, Biden pledged to restore American leadership on the world stage nearly four years ago. His vision for global cooperation, reaffirming the principles of the UN Charter, will take center stage.

The president’s UN appearance is part of a broader effort to bolster his legacy, following a one-term presidency cut short by concerns about his age. Former President Bill Clinton honored Biden with the “Clinton Global Citizen Award” on Sunday, recognizing his commitment to global cooperation.

Biden has worked tirelessly to secure lasting alliances, hosting leaders from Japan, India, and Australia for a farewell summit. On climate, he seeks to build “irreversible momentum” after Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris accords. A meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is also scheduled to discuss increased US support.

However, the Gaza ceasefire, a key goal for Biden, seems increasingly elusive. The situation in the Middle East is escalating, with recent Israeli attacks on Hezbollah strongholds in Lebanon claiming over 500 lives. Biden will address these challenges in his speech.

In a cabinet meeting, Biden urged a “sprint to the finish” to promote his policies and support Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign. His director of communications, Ben LaBolt, emphasized the need to “put a stake in the ground for the future” and restore “decency and dignity to the White House.”

As the world watches, Biden’s final UN address is crucial in shaping his legacy and America’s role on the global stage.
