Bishop David Oyedepo, the presiding bishop of the Living Faith Church and Chancellor of Covenant University, has made a significant revelation, stating that he has never earned any money from the institution. This disclosure, made during his address at the university’s 19th convocation on Friday, may challenge the perceptions of those who have long viewed the university as a commercial venture tied to Oyedepo’s personal business interests.
In his speech, Oyedepo clarified that his rewards from the university were not financial but rather centered on the success stories and personal growth of the students. “You are created to be a contributor. Find a place to contribute. You cannot be a contributor and be a failure. You will be part of the solution and not those who are problems,” he told the graduates. The statement highlighted his focus on the personal and societal impact of education rather than any direct monetary gain.
Addressing the students further, Oyedepo spoke of his vision for the future of Nigeria. He said, “We will see a brand new Nigeria. Don’t jump the fence. Your star is where you belong. A commitment to be at the center of God’s plan is very essential.” His words emphasized the importance of staying true to one’s path and contributing positively to the country’s development.
The bishop’s remarks also pointed to the role of education in nation-building, urging students to remain focused on becoming agents of positive change in their communities. “You are created to be a contributor,” Oyedepo continued, stressing the responsibility of each individual to offer solutions rather than be part of the problem. His message resonated with the overarching theme of leadership and service to society.
In a parallel address, Prof. Abiodun Adebayo, the Vice-Chancellor of Covenant University, echoed Oyedepo’s sentiments, expressing gratitude for the success of the institution. “The university is immensely grateful to God as another cohort of new generation leaders are being unleashed in the ecosphere as agents of positive change in our nation, continent, and the world,” Adebayo said. His remarks underlined the university’s mission to produce graduates equipped to lead and drive progress globally.
The convocation ceremony, which celebrated the achievements of the latest graduating class, was a moment of reflection on the role of education in shaping future leaders. With Oyedepo’s remarks about the non-commercial nature of Covenant University, he reinforced the institution’s commitment to nurturing character and leadership qualities, rather than focusing on financial gains.
