Bobrisky Sues EFCC for Alleged Human Rights Violations

Nigerian socialite and influencer Bobrisky has initiated a legal battle against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), accusing the agency of violating his fundamental human rights. The lawsuit follows a controversial incident earlier this month in which Bobrisky was reportedly removed from an Amsterdam-bound flight by EFCC operatives. The socialite claims that this action, along with the subsequent investigation, caused significant harm to his reputation and well-being.

Bobrisky alleges that the EFCC’s involvement began after a WhatsApp voice note, which was made public by Martins Vincent Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, surfaced online. According to Bobrisky, the recording was unverified and falsely implicated him in criminal activity. He believes that the EFCC acted without confirming the authenticity of the recording before summoning him for questioning, a decision that led to widespread ridicule and threats from unknown individuals on social media.

In his lawsuit, Bobrisky is seeking ₦1 billion in damages from the EFCC, arguing that the agency’s actions violated his rights to fair hearing, privacy, and freedom from discrimination. “They acted recklessly and without any regard for my rights,” Bobrisky said in a statement. “I was subjected to online harassment and my privacy was completely invaded.” The socialite is demanding compensation for the emotional distress and reputational damage he claims to have suffered as a result of the EFCC’s handling of the situation.

In addition to his lawsuit against the EFCC, Bobrisky has filed a separate case against the National Assembly, seeking ₦200 million in damages. He accuses the legislative body of irresponsible reporting and failing to investigate the allegations thoroughly. Bobrisky argues that the National Assembly’s actions further fueled the public spread of false claims and led to even greater public scrutiny.

The influencer has expressed frustration over the handling of the case by both the EFCC and the National Assembly. He contends that the agency failed to properly investigate the allegations before making them public, which ultimately led to widespread humiliation. Bobrisky claims that, in addition to the harassment and threats he received online, he was denied access to legal representation during the investigation, further exacerbating his sense of injustice.

Legal experts believe Bobrisky’s case could have significant implications for how Nigerian authorities handle cases involving high-profile individuals, particularly in the realm of social media. The EFCC has not yet commented publicly on the lawsuit, but the situation has sparked a broader debate on the limits of law enforcement powers and the protection of individual rights in the digital age.

Supporters of Bobrisky have rallied behind him, calling for justice and condemning the EFCC’s actions as an abuse of power. “Bobrisky is being unfairly targeted because of his status,” said one of his followers. “This lawsuit is about standing up for his rights and ensuring that no one else goes through what he has gone through.” Others, however, have raised questions about Bobrisky’s version of events, suggesting that both parties may share responsibility for the conflict.

While the legal proceedings unfold, the case has drawn attention to broader issues surrounding privacy, consent, and the role of social media in shaping public perceptions of individuals. Bobrisky’s decision to challenge the EFCC’s actions in court highlights the growing tensions between powerful institutions and the increasing influence of social media personalities in Nigeria.

For his part, Bobrisky remains resolute in his fight for justice. “This is not just about me,” he stated in a recent interview. “It’s about ensuring that no one else is treated the way I have been. My rights matter, and I will fight for them.” As the legal process continues, both the EFCC and the National Assembly will likely face increased scrutiny over their handling of the case and their treatment of individuals under investigation.
