Cholera Outbreak Hits Adamawa State, Nigeria: 12 Deaths Reported

A cholera outbreak has been confirmed in Adamawa State, Nigeria, resulting in 12 deaths, according to State Commissioner for Health, Felix Tangwami. Out of 50 suspected cholera cases, 30 were confirmed positive, with six deaths occurring in medical facilities and six at home. Tangwami revealed that 308 people have been admitted for treatment, with 244 already discharged.

 

“We received the results of samples sent to the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) for confirmation,” Tangwami said. “Unfortunately, 30 samples tested positive for cholera.” The commissioner urged the public to remain vigilant about their movements, hygiene, and water sources to prevent further spread of the disease .

 

To manage the outbreak, the government is working closely with health workers conducting awareness campaigns. Tangwami appealed to residents for cooperation and support, saying, “We ask for continued prayers and support as we work to contain this situation” .  This is not the first time Adamawa State has experienced a cholera outbreak. In 2021, the state reported 1,783 cases with 54 deaths, and in 2018, 1,168 cases with 20 deaths were recorded .

The Adamawa State Government’s prompt response and collaboration with health partners are crucial in containing the outbreak. Residents are advised to take preventive measures, including maintaining good hygiene practices and avoiding contaminated water sources, to minimize the risk of contracting cholera .
