The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has been declared the winner of the Edo State governorship election. Okpebholo secured 291,667 votes, defeating his main challengers, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party.
Prof. Faruk Kuta, the Returning Officer, announced Okpebholo’s victory at the collation centre in Benin City, the state capital, on Sunday. “That Okpebholo, having satisfied the requirement of the law, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected,” Prof. Kuta declared.
The Edo State governorship election saw a keen contest between the three major parties. Okpebholo’s APC secured a significant lead, while Ighodalo’s PDP garnered 247,274 votes. Akpata’s Labour Party finished third with 22,763 votes.
Edo State is divided into 18 Local Government Areas, traditionally segmented into Edo North, Edo South, and Edo Central. Edo North has historically been an APC stronghold, while the PDP has maintained dominance in Edo Central and Edo South.
In specific Local Government Areas, the results showed varying margins of victory for the APC. For instance, in Igueben LG, the APC secured 5,907 votes, while the PDP garnered 8,470 votes.
