The Ekiti State government has intensified its efforts to combat gender-based violence (GBV) by rallying support from key stakeholders, including local government leaders, traditional rulers, religious bodies, civil society, and the general public. Deputy Governor Mrs. Monisade Afuye expressed concern that GBV continues to devastate society, shattering dreams and claiming lives .
At a two-day workshop on GBV organized by the Office of the Ekiti State First Lady and the Ministry of Local Government Affairs, Afuye emphasized the need for collective action to tackle this menace. She called on stakeholders to join forces with Governor Biodun Oyebanji to eradicate rape, sexual molestation, female genital mutilation, and other anti-social behaviors in Ekiti. Afuye described GBV as a “monster” that has destroyed families, ambitions, and lives, stressing that it must be fought collectively .
Dr. Olayemi Oyebanji, the governor’s wife, represented by Dr. Folakemi Olomojobi, advocated for a united approach to GBV through policies and actions that bring about meaningful change and reshape public attitudes. She emphasized that GBV is not only a human rights violation but also a societal menace that undermines community dignity, safety, and progress .
Attorney General Dayo Apata (SAN) described GBV as a monster and praised the workshop as timely, highlighting the Ministry of Justice’s efforts to swiftly prosecute offenders. Apata reported that within the last year, they concluded 30 cases, securing 24 convictions . This collaborative effort demonstrates Ekiti State’s commitment to combating GBV and promoting a safer, more just society
