The Nigeria women’s rugby team, the Green Falcons, are poised to secure a spot in the 2025 World Series with a second victory over Kenya in the second leg of the MEA Women’s Rugby League World Cup Qualifiers today at the Impala Stadium, Nairobi.
Nigeria made history on Thursday with a 22-14 win over Kenya in the first leg, leaving no room for permutations ahead of the decisive clash. Coach Bolu Fagborun expressed confidence in his team, saying, “I’ve been really impressed by the attitude and determination shown by this group of women… We have some exciting players who will be encouraged to express themselves.”
Fagborun praised the team’s management, chair, and sponsors, saying, “Well done to all… who’ve worked so hard to ensure that this group of women gets this opportunity to play international sports.”
Nigeria Rugby League Vice Chairman Ade Adebisi echoed Fagborun’s sentiments, stating, “Our team has been working tirelessly in preparation for this pivotal moment… We are confident that the hard work, dedication, and passion of our players will shine through.”
However, Kenya’s head coach, Dennish Ndinya, remains optimistic, saying, “Every match is a step toward our World Cup dreams… We plan to play with heart, focus, and unity.” Co-captain Moreen Atieno added, “Let us channel our focus and determination onto the field… every action counts.”
A Kenyan win would determine the World Series berth on aggregate score, but Nigeria’s momentum and determination make them favorites to qualify.
The Nigerian squad includes Blessing Funmilayo Aladeyelu, Tolulope Lauretta Bayere, and Perpetua Mmanna, among others, all ready to take on the challenge and secure Nigeria’s spot in the 2025 World Series.
