Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has vehemently denied accusations of corruption and misappropriation of public funds during his tenure. In a recent interview on Freedom Radio, Kaduna, El-Rufai stated, “I did not join politics to steal money or enrich myself. I was satisfied with what I had before becoming governor”. He also expressed willingness to swear on the Quran to prove his innocence, challenging other former governors and current leaders to do the same.
El-Rufai emphasized his commitment to serving the people, saying, “I have always prayed for guidance in all I do, and I strive not to betray the trust of the people”. He criticized the allegations against him, pointing out the lack of concrete evidence and suggesting that they are politically motivated.
The former governor’s administration was indicted by the Kaduna State House of Assembly for misappropriating over N423 billion during his eight-year tenure. However, El-Rufai remains adamant that he has done nothing wrong and is focused on clearing his name. “I have left everything to God’s judgment. I have prayed and will remain silent on the issue. I have instructed my lawyers to take legal action against those tarnishing my name,” he said.
El-Rufai also highlighted his continued commitment to serving the people, even outside of office. “You don’t need to hold a position in government to serve. We are still working with like-minded individuals who genuinely want to serve the people, not those seeking to enrich themselves,” he emphasized.
Looking ahead, El-Rufai revealed plans to return to politics in 2027 after completing his studies. “There is no retirement in politics. God willing, we will return and continue serving the people,” he remarked.
El-Rufai’s legacy has been marked by controversy, including allegations of religious discrimination and human rights abuses during his tenure as Governor. However, he remains a significant figure in Nigerian politics, having served as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and Governor of Kaduna State.
As the debate surrounding El-Rufai’s legacy continues, Nigerians remain divided on his impact and intentions. While some view him as a champion of reform and progress, others see him as a symbol of corruption and division.
