Tech billionaire Elon Musk has expressed support for the United States to withdraw from both the United Nations (UN) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). His stance was revealed in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, sparking debate on the country’s role in global alliances.
Musk’s remark came in response to a post by political commentator Gunther Eagleman, who wrote on March 1, “It’s time to leave NATO and the UN.” Musk, who also leads Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), simply reposted the message with the words, “I agree.”
Further reinforcing his position, Musk shared a statement from Republican congressman Thomas Massie, who represents Kentucky’s fourth congressional district. Massie described NATO as “a Cold War relic that needs to be relegated to a talking kiosk at the Smithsonian.” Musk’s engagement with these posts suggests alignment with voices advocating for a reassessment of the United States’ commitment to international organizations.
Musk’s remarks come amid growing calls from Republican lawmakers to reconsider US membership in NATO. Utah Senator Mike Lee, a known critic of the alliance, has previously argued that NATO is outdated and disproportionately benefits European nations while offering what he called a “raw deal for America.”
The billionaire’s support for NATO withdrawal could add fuel to an already heated political discussion, particularly as former President Donald Trump has also criticized the alliance in the past. Trump has repeatedly suggested that European nations should contribute more financially to their own defense instead of relying on American military power.
Musk’s endorsement of these positions raises questions about his increasing influence in political discourse. His comments come at a time when geopolitical tensions are rising, with NATO continuing to play a crucial role in global security, particularly in response to conflicts involving Russia and China.
