FG Inaugurates Inter-Ministerial Committee for 64th Independence Day Celebration

The Federal Government has officially kicked off preparations for Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day celebration, scheduled for October 1, 2024. To oversee the festivities, an Inter-Ministerial Committee was inaugurated on Thursday by the Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination, Hadiza Usman, representing Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume.

According to Akume, this year’s celebration will be low-key due to the country’s economic challenges. “The 64th Independence Anniversary celebration will be low-keyed to reflect the trying times the nation is undergoing,” he stated. Despite the scaled-down celebration, Akume emphasized that the event will provide an opportunity for the government to showcase its achievements. “The event will afford the government the opportunity to showcase to Nigerians its scorecard recorded within the short period in office to reposition Nigeria through its reform initiatives to deliver the dividends of democracy.”

The celebration will commence with a World Press Conference on September 26, 2024, followed by a Juma’at Service on September 27, 2024, and a Church Service on September 29, 2024. The Presidential Broadcast and 64th Independence Day Parade will take place on October 1, 2024.

The Inter-Ministerial Committee comprises representatives from various ministries and agencies, including the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Minister of Information and National Orientation, and Minister of Interior. Other members include the National Security Adviser, Director-General of the Department of State Services, and the Inspector-General of Police.

The committee’s terms of reference include planning, organizing, and executing approved activities, co-opting relevant organizations or individuals, documenting planned activities, and carrying out other assignments necessary for the celebration’s success.

Nigeria gained independence from Britain on October 1, 1960, and this year’s celebration marks 64 years of sovereignty. The inauguration of the committee marks the beginning of preparations for the celebration.

As Nigeria prepares to celebrate its 64th Independence Day, the government reassures citizens of its dedication to delivering the dividends of democracy.
