Nigerian stand-up comedian Bovi Ugboma has expressed his opposition to corporal punishment, stating that children should never be beaten as a form of correction. During a recent appearance on The Honest Bunch podcast, Bovi shared his views on child discipline, emphasizing that such practices are harmful and should be stopped.
“I don’t advocate for beating children,” Bovi said during the podcast. “You should let children be. When you hit a kid, are you really trying to correct them or are you frustrated?” His statement underscored his belief that physical punishment does more harm than good, urging parents and caregivers to reconsider their approach to discipline.
Bovi further explained that the act of beating children often stems from the adult’s own frustration rather than an effective teaching moment. He encouraged a more patient and understanding approach to addressing a child’s behavior, suggesting that verbal communication and guidance are far more beneficial in the long run.
In addition to discussing parental discipline, Bovi also criticized the practice of senior students punishing their junior colleagues in schools, particularly in primary and secondary education. He strongly condemned the authority granted to older students over younger ones, calling for an end to this practice.
“No child should be given authority over another child in the name of ‘senior student,’” Bovi declared. “It really has to stop.” He argued that such practices contribute to a culture of bullying and hierarchy among students, which could have long-term negative effects on their emotional development.
