“I Want People to Remember Me as That Guy Who Came Out of Nothing and Became Something” – Ice Prince

Nigerian rapper Ice Prince has opened up about the difficult circumstances he faced while growing up, revealing how financial hardships prevented him from continuing his education. In a recent appearance on the Listen with Osi podcast, the award-winning artist shared the story of his rise to fame, detailing the obstacles he overcame and the impact they had on his career.

When asked how he wanted to be remembered, Ice Prince responded thoughtfully, expressing his desire for his life story to serve as an inspiration. “I want people to remember me as that guy who came out of nothing and became something,” he said. “Look at my life story and be like, ‘if this idiot can make it then I don’t have any excuse to fail.'”

The rapper also discussed the profound effect that losing both of his parents at a young age had on his life. “I don’t have a mother, I’m an only son and that’s quite tough,” he said. “I’ve been that way since I was 11 years old when I lost my dad. I was 21 or 22 when my mum passed away, and I have a family that depends on me.” Ice Prince emphasized the loneliness he felt, noting that he had no extended family or mentors to rely on, adding, “I don’t have any uncles, aunties, Godfathers or Godmothers that I can depend on. It’s been nothing but God in my life.”

Reflecting on his school years, Ice Prince explained how financial difficulties played a significant role in his educational journey. He revealed that he spent considerable time away from school because of his inability to pay fees. “I was the guy who would spend at least 3 weeks out of every school term at home because of school fees,” he recalled. His story resonated with many who have faced similar challenges in their educational pursuits.

One of the most poignant moments of the interview came when Ice Prince spoke about how a lack of funds stopped him from attending university. He explained how a seemingly small amount of money had a major impact on his future. “I didn’t go to university because of 20,000, which is like one spliff now,” he said, referring to the cost of a registration fee. “I had two weeks to pay that money for a registration and I couldn’t come up with it and that’s how I lost the admission and I became a studio rat from there.”
