Nigerian musician, Seun Kuti has taken to social media to clarify his position on European colonialism, asserting that his criticism is aimed at colonial systems, not the people of Europe. Known for his vocal opposition to imperialism and corruption, Kuti used his Instagram platform to explain that his stance should not be misinterpreted as animosity towards Europeans.
In his post, Seun Kuti emphasized the need for a more equitable world, urging followers to understand the distinction between his opposition to colonialism and any personal feelings toward European individuals. “I’m against European colonisation and imperialism but that does not mean that I’m against European people,” he wrote.
The Afrobeat singer further explained that throughout history, many Europeans have been allies in the fight against greed and injustice, advocating for a fairer global system. “Many Europeans have been our allies in the fight against greed and unfair systems, to make the world a fairer place for everyone,” he stated.
Kuti made it clear that his criticisms are directed at the legacies of colonialism and imperialism rather than the people of European descent. “Being against colonisation does not mean being against Europeans, many have stood with us in the fight for justice and fairness,” he said, reinforcing the idea that his fight is rooted in justice, not hatred.
The clarification comes amidst a history of strong public statements by Kuti against what he perceives as systemic inequalities, including European colonial practices that have had long-lasting effects on African nations. His position on these issues has often sparked debate, with some misinterpreting his critiques.
By speaking out, Kuti aimed to dispel any misconceptions about his views, making it clear that his fight is for a world free from exploitation and inequality. “My fight is for fairness, for justice, for a world where all people are treated equally,” he added, outlining his broader goals of social and political change.
