Datti Baba-Ahmed, the vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, has reiterated warnings about the dangers of the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership, citing Nigeria’s economic hardship and security challenges. Baba-Ahmed’s comments come amid widespread difficulties faced by millions of Nigerians since President Bola Tinubu assumed office on May 29, 2023.
“We didn’t have a crisis. We managed a transition which was a bit bumpy and that was it,” Baba-Ahmed said at the Labour Party’s Interim National Caretaker Committee meeting in Abuja, representing Peter Obi, the party’s former presidential flag-bearer. He emphasized that the Labour Party remains a formidable force, ready to offer a new direction to the country going into the 2027 presidential election.
Baba-Ahmed highlighted the party’s achievements, including taking their case to the Supreme Court, claiming 10 million votes, and emerging as a force to contend with in Africa. “We started, it was organic, It was us. It was Nigerian people. It was Obidients, and we defeated two existing political parties,” he said.
The former Federal lawmaker criticized the APC’s performance, citing economic mismanagement, security failures, and corruption. “They are failing more on the Nigerian economy. They are destroying the security of Nigeria. Every day in the news, you report it, our citizens are abducted. They are killed in hundreds of villages.”
Baba-Ahmed also addressed the leadership tussle in the party, stressing that no governor removed Julius Abure, but rather, the party’s constitution removed him due to tenure expiration. He invited Abure and his team to join the Caretaker Committee to rebuild the party.
