The Lagos State Government has sounded the alarm on the dangers of using sub-standard materials in building construction, emphasizing the risks to lives and investments.
Olayinka Abdul, General Manager of the Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory Agency, stressed the need for collaboration among construction professionals to prevent building disasters. “There is need for a systematic coordination amongst specialists in the built industry for all construction of structures,” she said.
Abdul highlighted the importance of adherence to regulations, noting that “the use of sub-standard materials poses high risks to lives and investments.” She also emphasized the need for proper scrutiny on jobs to prevent decadence in implementations.
Nigerian Institute of Builders (NIOB) President, Bldr Adeoye Thomas, expressed concern over frequent building collapses in Lagos. However, he praised Abdul’s leadership, saying her “aggressive approach” would bring order to the industry.
Past NIOB President, Engr. Adenike Saeed, applauded Abdul’s commitment and credibility, stating that her leadership would give the LSMTL its deserved recognition.
The Lagos State Government’s warning comes amid growing concerns over building collapses in Nigeria. Experts estimate that sub-standard materials account for up to 52% of architectural faults.
