Lagos Youths Reject Seyi Tinubu’s Endorsement for 2027 Governorship Election

The Coalition of Lagos Indigenous Youths has officially rejected the endorsement of Seyi Tinubu, son of Nigeria’s president, as a candidate for the 2027 governorship election in Lagos State. The youth group’s stance comes after an umbrella organization representing various youth groups across the country, the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders (CONYL), publicly backed Tinubu’s candidacy earlier this week.

CONYL, which convened a meeting in Owerri on Tuesday, announced their endorsement of Seyi Tinubu as the ideal candidate to govern Lagos in the upcoming election. The organization highlighted Tinubu’s experience and ties to the state’s leadership as reasons for their support, arguing that he would continue the legacy of his father, President Bola Tinubu.

In response, the Coalition of Lagos Indigenous Youths issued a statement on Wednesday, formally distancing themselves from the endorsement. The group, led by Abdul Kareem Whyte, voiced their discontent with the decision made by CONYL, which they said did not reflect the wishes or interests of Lagosians. The Lagos youths argued that the endorsement of Seyi Tinubu by an external group undermines local governance and the autonomy of Lagos residents.

“We reject this endorsement in the strongest terms,” said Abdul Kareem Whyte in the statement. “Lagos should be governed by someone who understands the local dynamics, the challenges, and the aspirations of its people, not by an individual merely chosen for his connections or family background.” The Coalition of Lagos Indigenous Youths called for a more inclusive process that would reflect the true will of the people of Lagos in the 2027 election.
