The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed substandard products worth ₦43 billion in Ibadan, Oyo State. The exercise, which took place at a dumpsite in Moniya, was part of NAFDAC’s efforts to protect Nigerians from harmful products.
According to NAFDAC’s Director-General, Christiana Adeyeye, represented by Shabba Mohammed, the counterfeit products were voluntarily handed over by compliant companies, NGOs, and trade unions. Adeyeye noted that raids were carried out at various locations, leading to the confiscation of unregistered and registered pharmaceutical items.
“The confiscated products include aphrodisiacs, sex enhancement drugs, over-the-counter medicines, and prescription-only medications,” Adeyeye stated. “More than 30 types of products were seized, including banned Codeine substances, narcotic drugs, antimalarials, aphrodisiacs, analgesics, and antibiotics worth over ₦48 million.”
Adeyeye further revealed that NAFDAC gathered intelligence on illegal warehousing and distribution of Schedule One narcotics, leading to seizures worth over ₦700 million. Additional items destroyed included illicit pharmaceutical products, contraband soaps, tomato paste, unregistered drinks, food products, perfumes, and body sprays.
Adeyeye urged the public to support NAFDAC’s fight against counterfeit drugs and fake products by reporting suspicious activities to the nearest NAFDAC office. “We need the public’s support to rid the country of these harmful products,” she emphasized. The exercise was witnessed by security agencies, the Oyo State Government, and other stakeholders.
