Nigeria Bans Monotherapy Drugs in New Effort to Combat Malaria Resistance

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially banned the use of monotherapy drugs for the treatment of malaria, marking a significant step in the country’s efforts to combat the growing resistance to malaria treatments. The banned drugs include artesunate and artemether injections, chloroquine, and sulfadoxine/pyrimethamine (SP), all of which had been previously used to treat malaria. This decision, announced by health authorities, highlights the government’s commitment to addressing the rising threat of drug-resistant malaria parasites.

The move to ban monotherapy is driven by mounting concerns that using a single drug to treat malaria has become less effective. “Monotherapy has been found to be less successful due to the parasite’s evolving resistance,” explained a spokesperson from Nigeria’s Ministry of Health. The use of monotherapy has contributed to the development of drug-resistant strains of the malaria parasite, making it more difficult to control the disease effectively.

In response to this challenge, Nigerian health officials are now promoting the use of Artemisinin-based Combination Therapy (ACT) as the preferred treatment. ACT is considered the most effective approach to managing malaria in the country. “This ban is crucial for protecting public health and ensuring more effective management of malaria,” said the Ministry spokesperson. ACT, which combines artemisinin derivatives with other antimalarial drugs, has been recommended by global health organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), as a standard treatment for malaria.

This move aligns with international health recommendations and underscores Nigeria’s determination to fight malaria, a disease that remains one of the country’s most significant public health challenges.
