Oyo State Celebrates Justice Olukayode Ariwoola’s Meritorious Retirement

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has hailed the immediate past Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola, as a pride of the state and a man of integrity. Makinde, represented by Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal, made this statement during a special retirement prayer and thanksgiving celebration in Iseyin.

Ariwoola’s remarkable career was highlighted by Makinde, who noted that his retirement was a cause for celebration. “To ascend through the judiciary from the High Court to the Court of Appeal to the Supreme Court, and not only to serve in the Supreme Court but to become the CJN, is a real privilege that comes with integrity and good character,” Makinde said ¹. He added that Ariwoola’s meritorious retirement was a testament to his commendable performance as a judge and CJN.

Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, Chief Justice of Nigeria and chair of the occasion, praised Ariwoola as a good leader who positively impacted the judiciary. Ariwoola’s legacy was also acknowledged by Ashiru Kolawole, National Missioner of the Istjabah group, who encouraged him to remain thankful to Allah and observe the five daily prayers.

Ariwoola’s impressive career spanned several decades, culminating in his appointment as the substantive CJN on June 27, 2022. He was formally confirmed by the Senate on September 21, 2022, and retired on August 22, 2024, upon reaching the mandatory age of 70.

The celebration was attended by esteemed guests, including Justices from the Supreme and Appeal Courts, Oyo State Chief Judge Iyabo Yerima, members of the Bar and Bench, state cabinet members, captains of industry, royal fathers, religious leaders, family, and friends.

Makinde emphasized that Ariwoola’s retirement was a joyous occasion for the state, his family, and the judiciary. “We are celebrating,” he stated.
