Panic as Explosion Erupts at Otedola Bridge, Motorists Flee

A massive explosion at the Otedola Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway caused widespread panic on Tuesday evening. The incident, which occurred around 7 p.m., created heavy traffic congestion as motorists scrambled to escape the scene.

Eyewitness footage shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) captured thick flames billowing from the explosion site. The exact cause of the explosion remains unclear, but online reports suggest a petrol tanker may have been involved.

An X user, Tonye Oliver, described the incident as catastrophic. “Ongoing tanker fire at Otedola Bridge, this is a major disaster!!” he wrote. Another user, Pamilerin Adegoke, urged commuters to stay away from the affected area. “Please avoid the Bridge, heavy fire right now,” Adegoke posted.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene to contain the situation. The spokesperson for the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Nosa Okunbor, confirmed their presence in a brief WhatsApp message. “Some sort of explosion. Awaiting Preliminary Report. LASEMA’s Tiger Response Team at the location,” Okunbor stated.

The explosion heightened concerns about the recurring incidents of tanker-related fires along major roads in Nigeria. In recent months, similar accidents have led to fatalities and severe damage to properties. Just last week, a tanker explosion in Niger State claimed seven lives and destroyed farmlands.

Authorities have yet to release an official statement on the cause of Tuesday’s explosion or confirm any casualties. However, road users and residents have called for stricter enforcement of safety regulations to prevent such tragedies.

As investigations continue, motorists are advised to seek alternative routes to avoid further gridlock and potential hazards in the area. Further updates are expected as emergency agencies work to assess the full impact of the explosion.
