President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has departed Abuja for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to attend the 19th G20 Leaders Summit scheduled for November 18-19, 2024. The summit, hosted by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, will bring together leaders from the world’s largest economies to discuss critical global issues. According to a statement by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the summit’s central theme is “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet.”
The G20 Summit will cover a broad range of topics, including strategies to combat poverty and hunger, addressing the global energy transition, and fostering sustainable development. President Tinubu is expected to actively participate in discussions aimed at finding solutions to these pressing challenges, which have global implications. The summit provides an important platform for world leaders to collaborate on creating a more equitable and sustainable future.
As part of his engagement at the summit, President Tinubu is expected to advocate for reforms in global governance institutions, a priority for Nigeria in recent years. Onanuga emphasized that “Nigeria has consistently championed the reform of global governing institutions and presented its strong credentials for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.” This reflects Nigeria’s ambition to play a more influential role in global decision-making processes.
In addition to his participation in plenary sessions, President Tinubu will engage in several bilateral meetings with fellow world leaders. These discussions will focus on advancing Nigeria’s socio-economic reforms, particularly in critical sectors such as agriculture, energy, and infrastructure. By building stronger international partnerships, Tinubu aims to secure support for initiatives that could drive growth and development within Nigeria.
The president’s delegation includes key government officials who will accompany him in Brazil. Among those traveling with him are Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Livestock Development Mukhtar Maiha, and Minister of Arts, Tourism, Culture, and Creativity Hannatu Musawa. Their presence underscores Nigeria’s broad focus on various sectors, from foreign diplomacy to cultural and economic development.
This summit presents a unique opportunity for Nigeria to assert its position on several global issues while seeking to strengthen its international relations. For President Tinubu, the G20 platform is also a chance to position Nigeria as a key player in shaping global policies that impact emerging economies, particularly in the areas of climate change and sustainable development.
