Pastor Tobi Adegboyega, the founder of Salvation Proclaimers Anointed Church, is facing criticism after inviting popular Nigerian pop star Davido to perform at his birthday party. The decision to blend secular entertainment with the religious setting has sparked a heated debate, with many questioning the appropriateness of such an event for a man of the cloth.
The performance by Davido, known for his hit songs that are far removed from gospel music, has raised eyebrows among some churchgoers and social media users. Critics argue that Pastor Tobi’s actions contradict the values expected of a religious leader and undermine the message he preaches. Many have taken to social media to voice their disapproval, suggesting that such a celebration sends the wrong message to the congregation and the public.
One of the more prominent voices in the debate is Ossai Success Ovia, a special aide to the Governor of Delta State. Ovia took to his social media platform to express his disappointment in Pastor Tobi’s choice of entertainment for his birthday celebration. “I’m disappointed in Pastor Tobi for inviting Davido to his birthday party,” Ovia wrote, before continuing to criticize the event for failing to reflect Christian values.
In his post, Ovia described the performance as an “embarrassment to the Gospel,” accusing the pastor of deviating from his spiritual duties. “I didn’t feel the Holy Spirit’s presence, as the party was inconsistent with pastoral values,” he said. Ovia suggested that as a pastor, Adegboyega should have chosen gospel musicians to minister to his guests rather than invite a secular artist like Davido.
Ovia further questioned the appropriateness of Pastor Tobi’s behavior, calling for the pastor to reconsider his role. “As the founder of Salvation Proclaimers Anointed Church, Pastor Tobi Adegboyega’s actions appeared unrighteous, embarrassing the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ,” Ovia added. He argued that the pastor’s actions were inconsistent with the spiritual responsibility that comes with leading a congregation and suggested that he should “ask God for forgiveness.”
