The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially rejected the Edo State Governorship election results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). PDP acting National Chairman Umar Damagum made this known during a press conference in Abuja.
Damagum claimed that the PDP candidate, Asue Ighodalo, was the legitimate winner of the election and alleged that the election did not meet necessary democratic standards. “The PDP therefore unequivocally rejects the final result of the Edo State Governorship election as declared by INEC,” he stated.
INEC had announced that Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) won the election with 291,667 votes, defeating Ighodalo who garnered 247,274 votes.
Damagum alleged that the election was compromised by the APC in collusion with security operatives and INEC officials. “Our democracy is under threat,” he warned.
The PDP demands a review of the election results and has vowed to challenge the outcome in court. Damagum urged the people of Edo to remain strong and steadfast.
“The people of Edo State selected Ighodalo as their next governor and only their will, as expressed at the polling units, should be respected,” Damagum emphasized.
When asked about their confidence in the judiciary, Damagum stated, “We shall once again test the level of preparedness of the judiciary to deliver justice…the most important thing is that we shall subject them to greater scrutiny in the eyes of Nigerians.”
