Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has made headlines with a bold declaration about his marriage to Margaret Brownson. In a recent episode of the Honest Bunch Podcast, co-hosted by actor Chinedu Ani Emmanuel, also known as Nedu, Obi stated he would never divorce his wife, regardless of the circumstances.
Obi’s remarks came during a candid discussion where he addressed the strength of his commitment. “No matter what my wife does today, I won’t divorce her. I can’t separate from her. I can never. Even if she likes, let her shoot me, as long as I am alive, she’s my wife,” he asserted.
The former governor of Anambra State emphasized that his dedication to his wife transcends any potential wrongdoing on her part. “No matter what she does, I won’t marry someone else. She’s my wife. Whatever she likes, let her do,” he stated, suggesting that he does not see extramarital affairs as a reflection of his worth or character.
Obi further clarified his perspective on public perception and marital fidelity. “What is she going to do that would offend me? What? Maybe have an extramarital affair? It’s her business. It’s not me,” he explained. He pointed out that societal judgments would often focus on him rather than his wife’s actions, reinforcing his sense of loyalty.
The politician’s comments reflect a broader philosophy regarding personal relationships and public image. “They won’t say two of us have an affair. They would say Peter Obi is a very good man who married a woman who is [promiscuous]. That is it!” he remarked, indicating his awareness of public scrutiny.
Obi also touched on the practicalities of their relationship, sharing insights into their differing lifestyles. “You can’t quantify me with the life of my wife or children. No. We have different lifestyles,” he stated. He noted instances where they travel together but in different classes on flights, demonstrating a mutual respect for each other’s choices.
He continued, “Sometimes we are in the same plane but in different classes. She is in business class and I’m in economy. Because that suits her and it doesn’t conflict with my interests.” This example declares his belief in individual autonomy within their partnership.
