Presidency Confirms Betta Edu’s Exit from Cabinet Following Scandal

The presidency has officially ruled out any possibility of former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Betta Edu, returning to President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet. This announcement follows her suspension on January 8 amid widespread outrage over an alleged N585 million scandal, raising serious questions about her conduct while in office.

Speculation had arisen prior to the recent cabinet reshuffling that Edu might make a return, but those rumors have now been firmly dismissed. Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Information and Strategy, stated emphatically, “Betta Edu is gone.” He further confirmed that her position has been filled by a new appointee from Plateau State.

Onanuga elaborated on the situation, emphasizing the finality of Edu’s departure from the cabinet. “As far as this government is concerned, there is no place for her in this cabinet,” he said. This statement reinforces the administration’s stance against any potential return for the former minister.

The spokesperson also hinted at the involvement of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the matter. “The EFCC has not shared what they have but if you go by what the president has done, it shows that EFCC must have submitted something that actually justified that suspension,” Onanuga noted in an interview with Channels TV. This suggests that the allegations against Edu may still be under investigation.
