President Tinubu Approves N80 Billion for Alau Dam Expansion to Address Water Challenges in Northeastern Nigeria

In a bid to address the pressing water challenges in northeastern Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu has authorized the allocation of N80 billion for the expansion and reconstruction of the Alau Dam in Borno State. The approval was announced following a Federal Executive Council meeting held on Tuesday, signaling a significant move toward improving the region’s water resources.

Joseph Utsev, Nigeria’s Minister of Water Resources, made the announcement and highlighted the importance of the infrastructure project. Utsev, who also chairs an inter-ministerial committee on dams, stated that the funding would go toward much-needed rehabilitation efforts at Alau Dam. However, he noted that the funds would only be released upon final approval from the Federal Executive Council. The funding will play a critical role in modernizing the dam to increase water availability in the region.

The committee responsible for overseeing the expansion was established in September 2024 and is made up of ministers from various sectors including finance, environment, works, and information. Additionally, the National Security Adviser is part of the committee. This multidisciplinary approach has been crucial in evaluating dams across the country and recommending improvements that could enhance their overall efficiency and resilience, particularly in the wake of recent environmental challenges.

The Alau Dam, which has been under scrutiny due to its vulnerability during severe weather conditions, has been a focal point for the committee. In its ongoing assessment, the committee has already evaluated 35 dams nationwide, with Alau being one of the most affected by the floods in September of the previous year. The damage caused by the floods necessitated urgent attention, prompting the government to take action to prevent future occurrences.

“The interim report was presented to the Federal Executive Council today, and it underscored the urgency of strengthening the Alau Dam,” Utsev remarked. He emphasized that the dam’s role in water supply and flood control for the northeastern region makes its reconstruction critical to Nigeria’s broader environmental strategy.

Utsev also noted the significance of the expansion project, stating that the first phase is expected to be completed by July, with full operations slated to begin by December. The entire expansion project, which is estimated to take two years, will focus on reinforcing the dam’s structure to better withstand future flooding events. These improvements will help ensure the dam’s long-term functionality, providing a reliable source of water to the surrounding communities.
