Sociopolitical activist Aisha Yesufu has issued a stark warning regarding the future of Nigeria’s leadership, asserting that supporters of President Bola Tinubu will actively work to ensure that a worse successor follows him. Her comments reflect a growing concern about the potential implications of political loyalties and accountability in the country.
In a recent post on X, Yesufu criticized the trend of elevating past leaders based on the perceived failures of their successors. “Is Buhari now a competent leader because Tinubu is a worse disaster? Jonathan cannot be a competent leader because Buhari became a disaster!” she stated, challenging the logic that associates past leadership with the current situation.
Yesufu also condemned the threats directed at those who challenged Tinubu’s administration, highlighting what she described as a disturbing mentality. “The foolishness of threatening people who had the guts to change a failing and callous leader because the person that replaced him became a disaster is beyond comprehension,” she remarked, emphasizing the importance of accountability in governance.
She further expressed her belief that those currently supporting Tinubu would strive to ensure that a successor who is even less competent takes over, thereby allowing them to canonize Tinubu as a “saint.” “Don’t worry! Those supporting Tinubu today will do anything to ensure someone worse than Tinubu takes over so they can canonize Tinubu and make him a saint,” she warned.
Yesufu also criticized the passive attitude of the electorate, pointing out that many citizens fail to hold their elected officials accountable. “The biggest problem we have had is citizens’ refusal to hold those they voted for accountable,” she stated, calling for a shift in public mentality regarding civic responsibility.
She emphasized the danger of absolute power, stating, “Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Anyone who comes in without being checkmated by the people will go rogue in one way or another.” This statement underscores her call for active citizen engagement in governance to prevent future leaders from misusing their power.
Finally, Yesufu expressed concern about the growing disillusionment among voters, saying that many now hesitate to participate in elections for fear of being blamed for poor leadership outcomes. “There are many people who no longer want to vote for anyone, so nobody will say they are the ones that brought disaster! What nonsense!” she lamented.
