Trump Returns to Campaign Trail After Foiled Assassination Attempt

Donald Trump

Donald Trump resumed campaigning in Michigan on Tuesday, following a second apparent attempt on his life. Addressing a town hall meeting in Flint, Trump boasted, “Only consequential presidents get shot at.”

Trump linked the foiled assassination bid to his pledge to impose tariffs on Mexican and Chinese car imports. “You wonder why I get shot at? Only consequential presidents get shot at,” he said.

Kamala Harris, Trump’s election rival, reached out to him after the incident. “I checked on him to see if he was OK. I told him there’s no place for political violence in our country,” Harris said.

Trump praised Harris’s gesture, saying she “could not have been nicer.” Supporters at the town hall meeting expressed increased support for Trump following the incident.

Retired autoworker Donald Owen, 71, said, “I believe they want to kill Trump so he can’t run for a second term.” Trump positioned himself as the savior of the US auto industry, warning of “zero car jobs” if he loses.

However, Trump’s speech was marked by controversy. He defended his speaking style and made a puzzling claim about fossil fuel drilling, confusing Bagram air base in Afghanistan with a location in Alaska.

Harris addressed a false story spread by Trump about Haitian immigrants in Ohio, calling it “hateful rhetoric.” A new poll shows Harris leading Trump 49-46% in Pennsylvania.
