VDM Criticizes Government’s Dependence on Foreign Loans

Nigerian social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, also known as Verydarkman (VDM), has expressed his dissatisfaction with the financial policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, particularly its reliance on foreign loans. In a recent social media post, VDM made clear his concerns, criticizing the government for taking on substantial debt from international institutions and suggesting that there were better financial solutions closer to home. His comments come in the wake of reports that Tinubu’s government had borrowed a significant $6.45 billion from the World Bank in just 16 months.

VDM, who is known for his outspoken stance on various social issues, shared his frustration with the government’s fiscal approach by highlighting his own recent fundraising success. “In just 24 hours, I raised over N21 million for my new NGO,” he wrote in his post. “It’s disappointing that while I can raise millions locally, the government seems intent on borrowing billions from foreign institutions.” His remarks came across as a sarcastic jab at the government, as he hinted that, given his financial prowess, the administration might as well seek his help. “If I can raise this much, why doesn’t the government come to me for a loan?” he added.

The activist’s criticism extended beyond economic matters. VDM also targeted Nigerian comedian MC Jollof, accusing him of promoting football gambling, which he argued was detrimental to the country’s youth. VDM expressed concerns about the negative impact of gambling culture on young Nigerians, suggesting that individuals in the public eye, like MC Jollof, had a responsibility to set a better example for the nation’s younger generation. “If we are serious about the future of this country, we need to start promoting responsible behavior, not encouraging harmful habits,” he stated.

Amidst his social media criticism, VDM also announced the new initiative aimed at promoting transparency within Nigerian NGOs. He vowed to lead efforts to improve accountability and governance within the non-profit sector, which has long struggled with issues of financial mismanagement. “I believe in transparency and accountability,” he said. “My new project will aim to ensure that NGOs are held to the highest standards, so that donations and funds reach the people who need them most.”
