Actors Guild of Nigeria Explains Why Lawsuit Against Adanma Luke Was Not Pursued Over Junior Pope’s Death

Emeka Rollas, the President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), has provided an explanation for why the guild was unable to follow through on its initial threat to sue actress Adanma Luke following the tragic death of actor Pope Odonwodo, popularly known as Junior Pope. The actor, along with four crew members, tragically lost their lives on April 10, 2024, when their boat capsized on the River Niger in Asaba, Delta State, while en route to a movie location for the film The Other Side of Life, which was produced by Adanma Luke.

The incident led to the suspension of Luke from the AGN, a ban that was lifted in August 2024. However, Rollas explained that despite the guild’s initial intention to take legal action, a review of Junior Pope’s contract revealed legal obstacles that prevented any lawsuit from being filed by the guild. According to Rollas, the contract signed by Junior Pope with the producer of The Other Side of Life stipulated that only his direct family members, or his wife, would have the legal standing to pursue such a case.

“In the course of interacting with our legal adviser, he said that from the contract that Junior Pope signed with the producer, the AGN did not have the locum to sue. He said either the direct family or the wife should sue the producer,” Rollas revealed in a recent interview on Arise TV. This legal limitation ultimately prevented the guild from taking any action against Adanma Luke, despite the tragic circumstances surrounding the incident.

Rollas also highlighted that another complicating factor was the fact that Junior Pope had not been a dues-paying member of the guild at the time of his death. “He was just an actor who is big and has not paid dues in the last one year before his death,” Rollas explained, adding that this status further barred Pope’s family from receiving any benefits from the guild in the event of such a tragedy. This aspect of the guild’s membership requirements played a critical role in limiting the AGN’s involvement in the matter.

During the interview, Rollas spoke about his ongoing efforts to restructure the AGN, particularly in the wake of the Junior Pope incident. He revealed that the guild is now focused on improving its processes and introducing new measures that will help prevent such situations in the future. “We just came back from Los Angeles now, we are trying to change a lot of things. From the structure we are creating, tapping from the practice, we are going to begin licensing actors,” Rollas said, outlining the guild’s plans for reform.

The goal of these changes, according to Rollas, is to ensure that actors are better supported and that similar incidents, particularly those involving legal complications and financial issues, do not arise in the future.
