The Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidate in Edo State, Asue Ighodalo, has taken legal action against Senator Adams Oshiomhole, filing a N20 billion defamation suit over comments made about the Planwell scheme ¹. Ighodalo’s counsel, Ayo Asala (SAN) & Associates, demanded an immediate retraction and apology for the false and malicious statements.
In a letter dated September 16, 2024, Ighodalo’s lawyers stated that Oshiomhole’s allegations were baseless and intended to denigrate their client’s character and reputation for political gain. “Our client has absolutely no connection with and could never have been involved in any manner whatsoever with the purported ‘PLANWELL’ scheme,” the letter read.
Oshiomhole’s comments were made at a campaign rally on September 14, 2024, and were broadcast live on television and social media. Ighodalo’s team described the allegations as “another in a long line of such defamatory fabrications and statements” made by Oshiomhole.
The letter emphasized that Ighodalo is an accomplished Nigerian legal practitioner and corporate leader with an impressive public record. “It is clear that the fabrication of the unfounded and false story… is a figment of your imagination,” it stated.
Ighodalo has suffered “enormous unwarranted reputational damage” due to Oshiomhole’s allegations, according to his lawyers. They demanded a retraction and apology to be published in at least two national television networks and three nationally circulating newspapers.
Additionally, Ighodalo is seeking N20 billion in damages for Oshiomhole’s “false, defamatory, and malicious statements.” His lawyers warned that they would institute proceedings without further notice if the demands were not met.
Oshiomhole’s comments have sparked controversy ahead of the September 21 governorship election in Edo State. Ighodalo’s team remains determined to protect their client’s reputation and ensure accountability for the defamatory statements.
The defamation suit marks a significant development in the ongoing political tensions between Ighodalo and Oshiomhole. As the election approaches, the outcome of this case will likely have significant implications for both parties.
Ighodalo’s lawyers concluded their letter by reiterating their client’s commitment to protecting his reputation. “Our client is determined to ensure that these defamatory lies and fabrications… do not go unchallenged.”
