Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, has issued a public apology to former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, following a heated exchange during a Senate Ethics Committee hearing on Tuesday, March 25. The confrontation arose amid an ongoing investigation into the sexual harassment allegations against the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, which were levied by Akpoti-Uduaghan.
The tension escalated when Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi, representing Ebonyi North, insulted Ezekwesili after she told him to “shut up” during the hearing. In response, Nwaebonyi told Ezekwesili, “You’re an insult to womanhood,” sparking outrage among observers.
Akpoti-Uduaghan, who was present during the exchange, later took to X (formerly Twitter) to apologize to Ezekwesili for the verbal attack. In her heartfelt message, she wrote, “Dr. @obyezeks, Ma’am, I apologise for the insults. Know you took them for me… for us … as a mother and as a leader.”
The suspended Senator went on to praise Ezekwesili’s integrity and leadership, adding, “Know that you are a true icon of integrity, courage, and visionary leadership. Your unwavering commitment to good governance, education and democracy continues to inspire generations.”
Akpoti-Uduaghan also acknowledged Ezekwesili’s impact on Nigeria, writing, “A champion of accountability…Nigerians appreciate you. I celebrate your brilliance, resilience and selfless service. You are a hero.”
