The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Kano State Command has denied reports that 20 chairmanship candidates tested positive for drugs in the state.
According to a press statement by the Assistant Superintendent of Narcotics Public Relations Officer, Sadiq Maigatari, the agency was misquoted in the media.
The statement clarified that 20 candidates had indeed tested positive for drugs, but the number was not specific to any particular seat or political party.
The NDLEA emphasized that candidates presented themselves for the drug integrity test on an individual basis, without indication of the position they were aspiring for or their political party affiliation.
The agency stated, “We cannot explicitly determine who is contesting for Chairmanship or Councilorship positions.”
The NDLEA urged the public to await the official release of the test results at the end of the screening exercise, assuring transparency and accuracy in the electoral process.
The agency’s clarification comes amid concerns over the accuracy of reports on the drug test results, and the need for transparency in the electoral process.
