Peter Obi Urges Federal Government to Tackle Power Crisis and Invest in Development

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party and former governor of Anambra State, has called on the Nigerian government to provide lasting solutions to the country’s ongoing power crisis. Obi’s remarks came in response to another national power grid collapse, which plunged much of Nigeria into darkness, further highlighting the country’s struggles with electricity generation and distribution.

In a statement shared on his social media platform, X, on Wednesday, Obi expressed frustration over the persistent power sector challenges. “Again, yesterday the now regular news came that the National Grid had collapsed once again,” he wrote, referring to the latest grid failure that affected millions across the country. The power crisis has become a recurring issue, with blackouts becoming increasingly frequent.

Obi drew comparisons with South Africa, a country that had previously been behind Nigeria in terms of economic standing. “Just a few days ago, on the 25th of October, South Africa…celebrated seven months of uninterrupted power supply,” he pointed out, highlighting the stark contrast between South Africa’s progress in energy stability and Nigeria’s ongoing power struggles.

The former governor noted that South Africa generates and distributes about 40,000 MW of electricity, while Nigeria manages only a fraction of that, struggling to produce and distribute just 10% of South Africa’s capacity. “South Africa generates and distributes about 40,000 MW of electricity, while Nigeria struggles to generate and distribute just 10% of that,” Obi emphasized in his statement.

In light of these challenges, Obi also questioned the state of the nation’s energy distribution, asking, “Is there any tribe in Nigeria that enjoys uninterrupted power supply like South Africa?” He expressed his frustration with accusations that he was being a “tribal bigot” when raising concerns about the unequal distribution of resources across the country. “When I ask if any religion enjoys special privileges in this crisis, I am called a religious bigot,” Obi added, reaffirming his stance that the power crisis affects all Nigerians equally, regardless of tribal or religious affiliation.

Obi called for visionary leadership, stressing that the solution to the power crisis lies not in tribal or religious divisions but in competent governance. “The solution lies not in tribal or religious affiliations but in visionary leadership and a shared commitment to progress,” he said. He urged Nigerians to elect leaders who can invest in critical areas such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure, which would ultimately lead to increased electricity production and distribution.

The Labour Party candidate concluded by emphasizing the need to shift from a consumer-driven economy to a productive one, urging leaders to focus on addressing Nigeria’s systemic challenges and ensuring that the country’s resources are properly invested in key sectors that will improve the lives of its citizens.
